Master's & PhD Positions Open at the ROCKNHub
The ROCKNHub @ KAUST is looking for enthusiastic Master's and PhD students!
What is the ROCKNHub?

The Reef-Ocean Connectivity Knowledge Hub — The ROCKNHub — is KAUST's newest marine science research lab. It combines modelling, field observations, and meta-analyses to study the functioning of natural ecosystems, with a focus on coral reefs in the Red Sea and beyond. By linking oceanographic, ecological and data-heavy approaches through the quantification of habitat structure, seascape connectivity, oceanographic processes and spatiotemporal dynamics, the hub investigates key determinants of marine ecosystem functioning.

Research at the ROCKNHub aims to improve estimates of reef productivity, and to support effective coral reef conservation and the management of fisheries catches that are key to seafood security. KAUST's location on the shores of the central Red Sea provides exceptional access to extensive, diverse, and productive reef systems exposed to both global and regional stressors.

Available Projects

The Red Sea is a unique laboratory to study the interface between tropical oceanography and reef ecology. Available projects range from fieldwork-focused surveys of Red Sea coral reef communities (fishes, mobile and sessile invertebrates), reef habitat and seascape structure and context, to the global role of ocean-reef connections (e.g., particulate matter inputs from the ocean to the reef), and the evolution of reef systems. We quantify ecological processes by integrating global biogeochemical models, large-scale data compilation, and statistical and ecological modelling.

Specific Master's or PhD projects are not predefined — they will be developed collaboratively with selected students prior to enrolment and refined during the first year.

Support You Can Expect

ROCKNHub students can expect highly involved supervision and strong time investment from the PI and team, access to world-class computational and laboratory infrastructure, and to unique coral reef field settings. Students will be actively encouraged and will receive support to bring their research to the forefront of their field.

Please Apply If You...

...are curiosity-driven, enthusiastic about research and the ocean, and motivated to push the boundaries of your field. Do you enjoy finding solutions to problems while maintaining a positive and constructive attitude? Above all, we value applicants who recognise and make the most of the opportunities they are given. We seek students who do not shy away from working hard to learn, grow, and accomplish their research objectives.

Working hard is not a synonym of working extended hours or overworking. It is about focused, high-quality involvement and obstinate aspiration to iterative learning and improvement.

This May Not Be For You If...

...you are just looking for a job with low effort, extra diving experience, or simply additional income. If you are not driven by curiosity and genuine interest for the research, or are not open to experiencing a cultural environment that may differ from your own, this will likely not be for you.
